What Could Abnormal PT/INR Results Mean?

What Could Abnormal PT/INR Results Mean?

In our previous post, we shared some information regarding the normal range of PT/INR results considered acceptable by medical experts at MedlinePlus. It is important to note, however, that the normal range sometimes differs slightly among various laboratories. Since some labs test different samples and use different measurements, your provider of home health care in California suggests that you talk to your health care team about the specific meaning of your test results.

But then, what should you do in case your PT test yielded abnormal results?

Well, as a home health agency in Chula Vista, California that has been accredited by CHAP and certified by Medicare, there could be a lot of reasons behind it. If you aren’t taking blood-thinning medicines like warfarin, getting INR results of more than 1.1 means that your blood clots more slowly than normal. This may stem from a variety of medical conditions such as liver disease, bleeding disorders, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (i.e., a disorder wherein blood-clotting-controlling proteins become overactive). It may also mean that you have a low level of vitamin K.

On the other hand, if you are one of those receiving skilled nursing in California after being advised by your physicians to take warfarin to prevent blood clots, you will most likely be advised to maintain your INR results between 2.0 and 3.0, depending on why you’re taking the said medicine. Otherwise, having results that are higher than 3.0 might put you at an even greater risk for bleeding. Get results lower than 2.0, and you might also be at risk of developing blood clots.
